Was anyone else raised by a hoarder?

I think it's probably safe to consider both of my parents hoarders to a certain extent, dad more so than mom (who does it mostly under the guise of "collecting"). i'm not a psychiatrist myself, but i'd imagine hoarding has something to do with not being able to "let go". i notice that the things mom hangs on to tend to have some sort of connection emotionally a lot of the time - things that were mine once, anything that belonged to anyone who died. for her, i think it's trying to hang on to people. with dad, it's anything that may potentially become useful someday, and many things never got thrown out because they could be "worth money" someday. i think then security and control issues must be present too. again, i'm no psychiatrist, so this is just speculation on the part of someone who's observed this behaviour quite closely. i too feel terrible when people show up at my door and the place is messy - i'll let them in, but apologize profusely for any disorder the whole time they're there, lol. seeing how
